Mandarin, Korean language subjects offered in SJ campus

It’s a big cultural shift and it’s happening in Lorma San Juan.

Chinese Mandarin and Korean classes are this school year’s front row innovations as these foreign language subjects take an impressive headstart with the  graders and high school students.

Introduced on June 15, 2011 after the flag raising ceremony, the two Chinese Mandarin teachers Ms. Shi Hui Ling and Ms. Wu jin  as well as Korean consultant to Lorma Institue for Koreans learning English program (L.I.K.E.) Mr. Kwang Chun Park were received warmly by a beaming crowd of excited Lormanians.

Ms. Shi “Sherlyn” who graduated Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in Heilongjiang University in China will teach the Mandarin subject to Grade 1-5 pupils while Ms. Wu “Jean”, a graduate of TCSOL (Teaching Chinese as a Second Language) of Jinan University, will handle Grade 6 to 4th year High School students.

Mr. Park, who has been the school’s Korean program adviser since last year, will also be teaching the basics of the Hanggul language to third and fourth year students of the Special Science High School.

Mandarin and Korean classess are schedule twice a week and are included as a mandatory elective of the basic education curriculum.

The demand for bilingual experts in many business industries and companies worldwide has been one of the many key points that Lorma Grade School and Special Science High School Principal Mrs. Elizabeth Camara has pondered on for the past three years.

Mrs. Camara mentions the global concept of “citizens” and reiterates that modern society isn’t too selective of culture or race when it comes to development. In fact, she cites that for a student to be equally at par with his contemporaries in other countries, foreign language learning is imperative.

“There is a need to learn at least one or two foreign language before college,” she said. “This is also a benchmark of the Lorma San Juan campus for the upcoming opening of the Lorma International School.”

The two Mandarin teachers are volunteers of the language program established by the Confucius Institute to promote Chinese language learning in different countries all over the world. Both had undergone a rigid testing and screening process before being sent over as qualified instructors.

BS Pharmacy Freshman wins Free 4 Year Education

After ending a two month sprint of the Study At Lorma For Free campaign, a lucky winner has finally been drawn from among all the official entries posted on the Lorma Colleges Facebook page.

Jay Mark Foronda, a first year BS Pharmacy student, is the recipient to the Four Year Education Scholarship Grant courtesy of the Marketing and Information Technology Services department of Lorma Colleges.

His tuition fees and miscellaneous fees will be shouldered entirely by the school inclusive of the summer mandatory classes that are stipulated in the curriculum of his chosen course.

Executive Director Dr. Jose Mainggang was assisted by Dean of Student Affairs Mrs. Melba Ano in picking the winner to the Study Free campaign last June 16, 2011 at 3:20 p.m. at the Creative Services Office.

Foronda was having a class in Pharmaceutical Botany and Taxonomy when Publications and Communications Officer Ms. Marisol Jane Jomaya called him to relay the good news.

“Nanginginig po talaga ako ma’am nung tumawag kayo at pinakausap ko kayo kay Ma’am Ellen (Abiqui). Hindi ko po alam kung ano reaksiyon ko. Masaya ako na nenenerbyos,” the 15-year old scholar recalled.

A graduate of Narvacan National Central High School, Foronda knew about the Study Free Campaign in the orientation program conducted by the department for  first year and second year students.

“Noong nalaman ko po iyong tungkol sa facebook campaign ng school, gustong gusto ko na po talaga umuwi para makapagpost ako ng comment kaagad.”

He was excited to participate in the program knowing that the winner would receive a full tuition fee scholarship for four years.

An academic performer and Best in Computer Education awardee in high school, Foronda is thankful for this once in a lifetime opportunity that the school has given him. He says the blessing is overwhelming because it came at a time where in finances were a huge concern in the family.

His mother, an elementary high school teacher, had undergone several operations since 2002 with the clipping of an aneurysm due to hypertension and recently a total abdominal hysterectomy late last year.

His father is self employed and merely pitches in the budget of Foronda’s education expenses.

While still a high school student, he once mentioned to his parents that he would try to aid in paying for his tertiary education by being an academic scholar of the college.

He, however, never expected that money wouldn’t be a dilemma anymore by just writing the comment, I WANT TO STUDY AT LORMA in the school’s facebook page.

Aside from recieiving the full tuition fee scholarship for his Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Foronda will also be featured in ABS-CBN’s Naimbag na Morning Kapamilya and in Lorma Highlights, the official student publication of Lorma Colleges.

When asked about his plans after receiving the scholarship grant, he firmly asserted,”I’m aiming to graduate with flying colors po and I’ll do my best to be a dean’s lister.”

He also adds that once he graduates and become a licensed pharmacist, he will then be able to have his own pharmacy and repay all the sacrifices his parents have gone through for him to finish his schooling.

“Thank you Lorma Colleges for this opportunity,” he said gratefully as the interview ended.

The Study Free Campaign was officially loaded up on the official Lorma Colleges Facebook page at www.facebook.com/LORMACOLLEGES last May 16, 2011.

The campaign was conceptualized to explore digital and online social networking sites like Facebook  as a positive marketing avenue to advertise the academic programs and facilities of the college.

Since then, the number of likes of the school’s fanpage has ballooned from only 380 to more than 4,000 to date.

Flyers of the campaign were distributed during the enrolment in addition to the TV plugs and announcements aired by ABS-CBN and GMA.
